Yoga can be a way to "get in shape," an answer to back pain, a stress reducer. However, while yoga can cure what ails you, it is ultimately a spiritual practice. But how does one go from stretching one's hamstrings to having a "spiritual" experience?

Layer by layer, yoga works from the most material level — the body — to the subtlest level — the soul. By relieving the aches and pains of our bodies, yoga influences the next level, our energy. As our energy and breath become freer, the mind becomes more quiet and perceptive. Once our thoughts and emotions settle, we may catch a glimpse of the soul and its source. And once we do, we realize we actually are "one with everything", as the saying goes. Put another way, we experience a sense of union, or yoga.
